What Are the Types of International Passports?

Ordinary Passport

Typically valid for 10 years, this passport is issued to citizens of a country and grants permission for international travel. It is also called a regular or tourist passport.

ePassport

Known in full as electronic passport, this type of passport is a regular passport booklet containing an electronic chip in the cover, which holds the passport holder’s info and also offers an added layer of security against passport fraud.

Collective Passport

This is passport given to a group, like tour groups or school children, who are travelling together to a country overseas.

Official passport

An official passport is issued to government employees, allowing officials in the destination country be aware that the passport holder is coming into the country on official business or is serving as a representative of their home country in an official capacity.

Temporary passport

Also called an emergency passport, this is a type of passport issued when your passport has got lost or stolen and you’ve time constraint in applying for a new one.

What Are the General Procedures to Apply for a Passport?

These are the steps to get your Nigerian international passport:

Required Documents

To obtain a Nigerian international passport, you will need the following documents:

For adults, 18 years & above

• Citizens by birth are to present a letter of identification or their national ID card
• Citizens by registration or naturalization have to supply a Certificate of Registration or Naturalization
• A completely filled special form for the international passport
• One copy of the guarantor’s ePassport obtained in this country
• Two (2) standard passport-sized photographs that have been validated by the guarantor
• Birth certificate (age declaration)
• A guarantor’s form that has been filled in and signed by Oaths’ Commissioner
• Married applicants must supply their official status certificate
• Proof of payment

For children, less than 18 years

• Certificate of birth
• A standard passport-sized photograph that has been signed by one parent or the two
• Evidence showing a child’s parents are still Nigerian citizens
• A special application form containing every needed info
• Letter of consent
• Court Order document (when no parents are available)
• Proof of payment

Steps to Apply for a Nigerian International Passport

You can apply for a passport online as follows:

• Go to the Nigerian Immigration Services (NIS) portal
• Choose your passport type
• Choose your processing country
• Fill in all your details in the application form
• Upload scanned copies of all relevant documents.
• Choose your preferred method of payment (you can pay with your Visa cards)
• Once payment has been made, press “Submit”
• You will receive an Application ID as well as Reference number
• Now, print out your Guarantor’s form and get it certified
• Lastly, submit your completed application form, alongside other required documents in person at the passport office close to you, which you chose

If you will be using the offline route by applying through an agent, the process will require a longer time.
